It isn’t always about the dresses or the shoes when it comes to looking your best on the red carpet — it’s also not always about the ladies. I’m constantly gushing about my love of menswear — and thanks to the following fellas — I got my fill of some great red carpet suits and well-groomed men this year.
Model, and upcoming star of the “Romeo and Juliet” movie, Douglas Booth was a favorite of mine this year. He’s always been slightly on my radar, but he really caught my eye when he attended the EvianVIP Suite at Wimbledon this past summer brightening up black jeans and a white tee with a pinstripe bright kelly green blazer. I love a man in color.
He played it a bit neutral later on for the Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show in London. He, once again, wore black jeans and a low neck white tee –but, this time he dressed it up with a nice textured tan blazer cuffed to show off the white pinstripe interior detail. I love his choice of footwear! The brown and beige in his lace-ups made it all worthwhile.
He gets better with age and he’s always dashing, but I really dug the deep shade of blue that George Clooney wore to the London premiere of his political thriller “The Ides of March”. Skipping on a tie, Mr. Clooney left just two buttons undone on his black dress shirt. Simple and chic.
I’m not sure if I like the suit or if I just loved Eddie Redmayne‘s bold move of a denim-like blue suit at the London premiere of “My Week with Marilyn”. One thing is for sure — he didn’t let the look down. The color and texture were complimented with a pale blue shirt and silvery-grey tie.
I’m not the biggest fan of cream tuxedo jackets unless it fits the body really well. I was totally into the black and white look Pooch Hall went for at the Los Angeles premiere of “Jumping The Broom” this past summer. Because of his dark caramel complexion, the jacket really popped and helped him finish off a polished look.
Justin Timberlake was a man after my own heart at the GQ Men of the Year Awards back in November. A navy blue suit brightened by a crisp white shirt and set off with a bordeaux bow-tie? Yes, please and thank you.
The best dressed star on the red carpet of the Los Angeles premiere of “In Time” this past October was easily Matt Bomer. The incredibly dapper actor was dressed to his very best in a black striped Simon Spurr suit. I mean, really, can you not admit he looked hot that night?
He may have passed on wearing a suit to the Los Angeles premiere of “Happy Feet 2″ last month, but Common was dressed to impress in a pair of grey wash jeans, brown leather dress shoes, and a pinstriped shirt that was complimented by a lovely angled red and navy striped tie. I love how he finished off the look with a cozy navy blue zip-front sweater with a nice shawl collar.
I can say with confidence that, for me, the most stylish star in the cast of “Glee” is Kevin McHale. It’s so refreshing when a guy is adventurous with his style and will play with textures, color, and cuts. Kevin is always going above and beyond on the red carpet. Three of my favorite looks of his this year were, first of all, the black tuxedo with the white spotted dinner jacket he wore to the Golden Globe Awards this year. He gave a classic black tux a twist with an edgy jacket.
I definitely can’t forget his navy blue suit that he wore with a white shirt — sans tie — to the “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” Los Angeles premiere in August. Kevin made up for the nearly unfinished look with brilliant metallic gold wingtip lace-up shoes!
Later on this summer Kevin rocked blue on top and caramel on the bottom at the “Glee: Sing-A-Long” event. His shoes were just dark enough not to blend in with his dark gold trousers, and his sleek navy jacket picked up the thin stripes in his button front shirt. I especially loved his swept back ‘swoop’ hairstyle.
His best accessory for the red carpet? Those Buddy Holly-style opticals. Sadly, they were missing at the premiere.
He’s yet to wear a green suit, but Robert Pattinson didn’t lack on the red carpet this year at all. He didn’t look good just once, twice, or even three times — he had more than a handful of yummy looks in 2011, but I had to narrow down some of my favorites for this post. Shame, shame. Rob kicked off a stylish year with a Gucci bespoke navy blue suit at the Golden Globe Awards that really popped with his reddish locks he was sporting for his role as Edward Cullen in “Breaking Dawn”.
Immediately after wrapping the final film in the “Twilight” saga, Rob took off on a global press tour for “Water for Elephants”. For the NYC premiere he, once again, rocked a Gucci look — this time a textured dark grey suit with a deep, dark red tie. I guess that was the last bit of red I got from him this year; I’m holding out hope for another bordeaux suit like he wore last year for the “Eclipse” premiere.
Rob was feeling a bit blue for the rest of the tour! For the Australian premiere the sexy actor wore a striking grayish-blue two-button Prada suit, later he selected a navy design by Dries Van Noten when he brought the film to his home of London.
When it came time to release “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″, Rob rocked over ten suit looks for a crazy amount of premieres and talk show appearances — but nothing stood out to me like his Armani in London. Rob joined his co-stars Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner for the UK premiere of the film in November wearing head-to-toe Emporio Armani. The mixture of dark shades of grey in this single-button suit looked amazing on him. It didn’t hurt that his scruff and tousled hair were at their very best that night.
My best dressed man of this year was Ryan Gosling. Are you really surprised? No, I didn’t think so. No one can deny how much Ry Ry had it going on this year. I really think the Gos needs to take RPattz under his wing because this dude is willing to rock bright blue, dark purple, green, and probably even pink on the red carpet. He has no boundaries and I love it! As a man willing to take a risk, I think Rob would benefit from color as much as Ryan already does.
My favorite look of all was the dark moss green silk-blend two button Gucci suit he wore to the Los Angeles premiere of “The Ides of March” in September. The shade was downright gorgeous, and he only enhanced this more for me with the matching tie that featured a collection of diagonal stripes in various sizes and shades of green.
Earlier this year Ryan took to Cannes to promote his movie “Drive” and wore two equally fabulous Salvatore Ferragamo tuxedos. I can’t decide which look I loved more! Was it his bright blue tux with a shiny satin shawl lapel and matching trimmed pockets, or the wine and black look with super peaked lapels? Too much goodness.
Ever the Gucci fan, it was a black and dark silver checkered printed suit that Ryan selected for the “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” NYC premiere this summer. Talk about a bold move that he pulled off with an A+.
When Ryan feels like just adding a little bit of color to his red carpet look, he does what he did at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards — add a plum dinner jacket. Ry Ry hit the red carpet back in January wearing black trousers, a slightly unbuttoned white shirt, and a beautiful deep purple Salvatore Ferragamo brocade jacket with a velvet shawl collar.
He has set the bar way too high for 2012. Can anyone top him? We shall see.
