I’ve been asked by readers since March to reveal some of my red carpet dress selections that I’d like to see the stars in at Cannes, so I figured now was as good as time as any. I threw around some ideas with my “jury” of fashion pals to help create this list of favorites for the above mentioned stars.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are officially engaged and everyone can’t wait to see the power couple rock the Cannes red carpet his week for the first time since their announcement.
Naturally, they’re also anxious to see what the future Mrs. Pitt will wear!
Will it be a black gown? Will there be high slits involved? Will it be custom-made for her? All of these questions will soon be answered, but I wouldn’t doubt it that the answer would be “Yes” to all of the above.
It’s hard to visualize an exact gown for a star like Angelina when she so often wears something custom made for her. I could see her wearing Atelier Versace or something dazzling from Gucci Premiére, but Ang may also go for some of her recent favorite collections like Ralph & Russo, Jenny Packham or Romona Keveza.
If I had to go runway selecting for Ms. Jolie — this is what I would pick….
JENNY PACKHAM: Angelina has developed a style relationship with Jenny Packham’s gowns, having worn them at both the Golden Globes and Berlinale this year. I could see her in something from Packham’s Fall 2012 collection — such as this gorgeous bronze sleeveless gown with black underlayer elements at the bodice and belt.
ELIE SAAB: Who could forget when Jolie made headlines back in February for her elongated leg extending from a massive thigh slit in her Oscar gown? Despite that evening, Angelina is no stranger to this style! I wouldn’t be surprised if she selected a sparkling long-sleeve creation like this embroidered dress from Elie Saab ‘s Fall 2012 collection.
ARMANI PRIVE: It’s not often that Angelina strays from her beloved black and neutral-colored dresses, but I can’t help imagining her in this asymmetrical design from the Spring 2012 haute couture Armani Privé collection. Angelina would look amazing in this lime green paillette dress, but something tells me if she wore it that she’d have a custom beige or asphalt version.
As for the designer of the dress for her big night? My first guess is L’Wren Scott, but Nicole could totally switch it up on us and decide on a Atelier Versace creation, something custom or even a vintage couture gown.
If she’s feeling open to something new, these looks might be something she’d choose.
TOM FORD: I can’t look at this singular sleeve gown from Ford’s Fall 2012 collection and not envision Nicole wearing it. I don’t see her going for a big ball gown, but rather something sleek and column. If she goes that route, this black gown — with Swarovski crystal elements — would be perfect. It wouldn’t be the first time she opted for a bow at the neck.
ARMANI PRIVE: If Nicole opts for something by Giorgio Armani, I believe this strapless embroidered silver satin gown from his Spring 2012 haute couture collection would be ideal. It’s sleek, sexy and — as you can tell by the model — would look fantastic against Nicole’s fair skin and strawberry blonde tresses.
VERSACE: If she doesn’t wear something custom by L’Wren Scott, I believe her second choice will be to go for Versace. She could end up in Atelier or something custom, but if not, she has a lot of studded looks from the Fall 2012 collection to pick and choose from. This embellished white corset gown with a mesh sleeve could be Kidman’s perfect look.
She obviously likes Donatella’s studded pieces as she wore a silver dress from Spring 2012 to the Golden Globes this year.
I’m kind of excited to see what Sarah will wear, so while we wait for the big night to come along, I’ve decided to pick a few dresses out for her. While Sarah may not go for these exact looks, I think she might look to these designer collections for her premiere dress.
GIAMBATTISTA VALLI: Okay, so it’s a long-shot that Sarah could score something from the Spring 2012 haute couture collection but Valli, but how amazing would this tea-length black sequin paillette dress be on her? She’s very classic, but I could see her going all out for her big night. Besides, that golden bow is too cute.
JASON WU: Sarah is a big fan of Wu’s designs — and she’s very open about it. The Canadian actress wore a gown from the designer last year at the Toronto International Film Festival and she just wore another dress by him in Cannes last week. If Sarah opts for something from his Pre-Fall 2012 collection, I could see her in this dramatic blouse gown with red embroideries on the sheer bodice. If she wants to show a little skin in a bold way, this cobalt blue halterneck dress — with a statement collar and asymmetric rise-and-fall hem — could be perfect for it.
I’ve pretty much been campaigning for the last year to see Rob go for a colorful suit in a rich raisin shade or a brilliant forrest green. His golden hair, complexion and all around good looks makes him a candidate for just about anything.
Considering the theme of this movie, I can’t help but see him going for a black tuxedo. I wonder if a bow tie will be involved? If Rob’s feeling adventurous and wants to step outside of the typical black box, here are a few key looks for him…
Z ZEGNA: This teal suit from the Fall 2012 collection by Ermenegildo Zegna would look extremely handsome on the 26-year-old actor, if not the cut — at least the color. I’m a big fan of Robert stepping outside the usual black and grey and opting for dark shades of blue, green and red. Obviously he wouldn’t wear the leather gloves.
GUCCI: I’ll be a bit surprised if Rob doesn’t wear Gucci to the premiere as the Italian fashion house tends to be his go-to label when picking out his red carpet look. Rob often chooses some of his best looks with Gucci — who could forget his red suit at the premiere of “Eclipse” back in 2010? This time around, I could see him opting for a patterned look with a bow tie like this suit from Spring 2012. Then again, maybe Gucci has a forrest green suit just for him.
BERLUTI: I’ve never seen Robert wear a Berluti suit, but I couldn’t stop thinking of him when I came across this deep aubergine three-piece look from Fall 2012. If Rob doesn’t wear black or green, he should strongly consider something of the plum variety.
CHANEL: Anyone who follows Kirsten’s red carpet style knows this girl loves her Chanel haute couture. If Kiki opts for it this time around, I could see her in one of these two looks from Spring 2012. If Kiki’s feeling in need of a lot sparkle, she could select this sequin paillette embroidered dress in iridescent blues. Then again, she may want to keep the shimmer to a minimum. If that’s the case — I absolutely would love this plunging v-neck, pleated chiffon navy dress with embellishments at the shoulders and crystal blue embroidery at the bust and drop waist.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see that Kirsten already had her hands on a dress from the recently debuted Resort 2013 collection.
RODARTE: Kirsten wore a gown by Rodarte last year for Cannes and this year to the MET Gala. Everyone knows of her fashion devotion to the New York brand, and if she opts for a design by Kate and Laura Mulleavy this week, I could see her in this black strapless gown from Fall 2012 with a lace embroidered skirt.
Who knows, maybe Rodarte has something custom up their sleeves for Ms. Dunst.
As the face of Balenciaga‘s newest fragrance, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least to see Kristen hit the red carpet in a custom gown by Nicolas Ghesquière or even an archived look. I’d also love to see Kristen try some color and go for a blue, green, yellow or red gown, but I feel like she’ll stick with a dark palette this round.
If she decides to go dark…
J. MENDEL: This sheer cut-out creation, with black and green crystal embellishments, from the Fall 2012 collection would be a knock-out on Kristen. The silky, body-clinging style of it is also right up her alley as she doesn’t like big dresses — Kristen has said herself that she prefers to wear “tiny things” because it’s hard for her to move in gowns. This sexy dress would be perfect for her! If she decides to add a little movement to her look, Gilles Mendel also included this gorgeous black silk-chiffon gown with a sheer bodice and pleated skirt with black sequin elements at the straps and waist.
REEM ACRA: The moment I saw this single shoulder gown from Reem Acra ‘s Fall 2012 collection, I immediately thought of Kristen. The sleek cut would be amazing on Kristen’s lean figure, but she’d also be able to show off her famous legs with the semi sheer skirt. It doesn’t hurt that the dress is dramatically sexy and I love the bursts of champagne gold sequins.
