Florence Welch of the band Florence + the Machine really took the title “Costume Gala” to heart and wore one of the voluminous tiered dresses  from the Fall 2012 collection by Alexander McQueen to the 2012 MET Gala last night that I thought we’d never see on the red carpet.

It’s not that the dress isn’t beautifully embroidered — because it is. It’s also not because I couldn’t imagine seeing it in high fashion editorials — because I could. It’s just not an easy design to pull off and looks really difficult to move around in.

With that said, Flo took the challenge and opted for this dove grey ensemble with shimmering plastic appliquès. The dress appeared longer on her and was missing the fluffed collar seen on the runway.

She wore her gorgeous dark red tresses up in a braided hairstyle that has become quite popular on the red carpet lately, before finishing off her look with a white embroidered McQueen minaudière and matching open toe embroidered sandals.

Florence was a guest of McQueen head-designer Sarah Burton along with actress Cate Blanchett, pictured below.
