OPI has released a brand new collection to celebrate the highly-anticipated theatrical release of “Fifty Shades of Grey” (starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson), based on the racy best-selling novel by E.L. James. When I first heard about the release, I expected every single polish to be a shade of gray because of obvious reasons, however, the OPI team made sure to include nice pop of color in there to honor the third star of the film — The Red Room.
“Fifty Shades of Grey” hit the silver screen this Valentine’s Day weekend so–after you check out my review of OPI’s latest and pick up a bottle (or six) for yourself, make sure you stop by your nearest theater to take in Mr. Grey in all his suited glory.
Shine For Me
— A silver with blue micro glitter combination is the lone polish filled with glitter in the collection. While the formula allows for you to wear it alone, I think it requires too many coats and would probably work best as a topper. I used three coats for coverage, but could have probably used a fourth.
My Silk Tie
— This smooth, silky silver shimmer is a nod to Mr. Grey’s tie, a focal point of the movie poster and the best-selling novel cover art. The color is light with a bit of a pretty metallic tone. As for the formula, it was pretty ‘meh’ because the brushstrokes are obvious. I used three coats for coverage.
— The nice warm red creme provides the pop of color in the collection. It’s classic, bold and clearly inspired by the famous red room from the book/film, but while I understand the comnnection to the film–it’s not the seller of the collection, despite how pretty it is. I mean, OPI never disappoints with red. The formula is solid; I used two coats just to be sure, but you could get away with one.
Cement the Deal
— This softer shade is a light blue-toned gray creme. The formula was okay; I had a tiny bit of streaks but nothing that couldn’t be smoothed out easily. I used three thin coats for coverage.
Embrace the Gray
— This is a smooth slate gray creme. I wouldn’t say it’s boring, but it’s not a shade I found all that thrilling. If you’ve been looking for a color like this, you’ll be pleased because the formula was easy to apply; I, once again, used three thin coats.
Dark Side of the Mood
— This dark charcoal gray almost appears navy in certain lighting and it also has a super subtle shimmer. I absolutely love this gorgeous color! The formula was great too; I got complete smooth coverage with two coats.
VERDICT: Overall, this is a gloomy kind of collection. I mean, I get it, I know what the title of the movie is and I expected the entire collection to be various shades of gray, however, I still hoped for more of a variety in formulas. It would have been nice to see a glittering grey to pair with a creme, a shimmery red or even a deep mahogany. All of the colors included were very pretty, but my ‘must haves’ would be Romantically Involved, because it’s a great classic red, and Dark Side of the Mood–because I’m a sucker for a good charcoal. I recommend adding those to your polish collection.
