The 73rd Golden Globe Awards are happening this weekend so, in anticipation for it, I’ve prepared my annual fashion wish list! I typically pick individual dresses that I would like to see on a particular nominee or presenter, but considering more than fifty percent of the red carpet ends up featuring custom-designed gowns, I thought I would try something new this year. I’ve selected gowns I’m hoping to see in general — some of them could work for a few different ladies therefore I didn’t assign them to anyone.
More often than not, my picks have made it on the carpet in the past…just on someone other than the lady I imagined it for.
I’m sure we’ll see nominee Jennifer Lawrence in Dior – whether it’s custom or from the Fall 2015 Haute Couture runway, and I imagine fellow nominee Alicia Vikander will select a Louis Vuitton look; presenter Kate Hudson might return to the carpet in another Versace number while Lady Gaga could rock a bespoke Brandom Maxwell or Tom Ford stunner, but for the ladies who nab a design straight from the runway…hopefully it will be one (or two, or three–or all) of my favorites below.
If you’d like to see (and know) what the stars are definitely wearing, then I invite you to follow me on the big night (Sunday, January 10th) on Twitter [ @TheFashionCourt ] as I ID the celebrity style on the red carpet starting at 6:30pm EST! Remember to check back here at TheFashion-Court.com after the show starts for recaps, fashion details, and verdicts.

Alexander McQueen, Spring 2016 Ready-to-Wear
I’d love to see this gown glide down the carpet on Golden Globe night. Naturally I envision Rooney Mara, nominated for her role in “Carol”, in the dark and dramatic number. I’m sure a few alterations would need to be made for the sheer lace bodice, but I absolutely adore this unique creation.
Oscar de la Renta, Pre-Fall 2016
I’m completely in love with the latest ODLR collection and, quite frankly, I wouldn’t mind seeing quite a few gowns from that line on the red carpet, but it’s this embroidered belted bustier dress in particular that’s topping my ‘Must See’ list. I think Kate Bosworth, a presenter this year, or “Emipre” nominee Taraji P. Henson would look fabulous in this—but, Alicia Vikander would also be a great contender should she step outside of her usual go-to designer box.
Valentino, Fall 2015 Haute Couture
The recent Haute Couture collection from Valentino is nothing short of dreamy, and it’s filled with ideal dresses for nominees this award season. There are several I have in mind just for Cate Blanchett alone, but it’s this simple yet striking single shoulder stunner (say that ten times fast) that I’m hoping to see at this year’s Globes. I think “Brooklyn” nominee Saoirse Ronan would look beautiful in it, or perhaps “Outlander” nominee Caitriona Balfe.
Carolina Herrera, Pre-Fall 2016
I tried to stay away from too many dark dresses since everyone ends up wearing nude, pastels or white, but it’s winter and I’m in the mindset for it. How absolutely beautiful is this bold navy and black striped Carolina Herrera gown? As if the pattern wasn’t eye-popping enough, it has this gorgeous embellished bandeau peeking out the top and through the slightly open back. Someone with a little bit of edge to their style would need to step out in this… maybe Olivia Wilde?
Elie Saab, Fall 2015 Haute Couture
What’s a red carpet without a wish for a dreamy Elie Saab creation? I think I could make an entire wish list made strictly of his dresses, but I had to control myself. Amber Heard will be in attendance this year; she looked so beautiful in a metallic Saab number at the Toronto Intentional Film Festival last September, so she’s the first person I had in mind for this shimmering tiered lace beauty.
J. Mendel, Pre-Fall 2016
Can you please take a moment and focus on the exquisite detailing of this deep purple v-neck gown from J. Mendel? The draping effect at the black lace sleeves, the subtle peekaboo continued lace at the waist. This dress is so beautiful that I have all of my fingers crossed to see it on Golden Globes night.
There isn’t anyone in particular that I have in mind for this, I just really love this dress.
Marchesa, Pre-Fall 2015
This is another collection filled with beautiful gowns that are in need of making their red carpet debut. I absolutely love the dripping fringe on this golden short sleeve dress with a scallop edge v-neckline. There are several ladies I could see rocking this one: Amy Adams, Sophia Bush, Eva Longoria, and Olivia Wilde just to name a few…and luckily for us they’re all presenting this year, so there’s a chance.
Reem Acra, Pre-Fall 2016
I always enjoy seeing a midnight blue dress, and I especially enjoyed seeing this deep blue dress featuring a burst of metallic speckled shimmer within the latest autumn collection from Reem Acra. I think “Jane the Virgin” nominee Gina Rodriguez would look beautiful in the strapless high-low gown, wouldn’t she?
Schiaparelli, Fall 2015 Haute Couture
At first glance this is a very pretty golden gown, but if there was ever a dress that gave you the reason to say the (possibly over-used) phrase “sexy back” — it’s this gown.
Need I say more? I certainly hope this is a contender for Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett.
Christian Siriano, Pre-Fall 2016
This might be one of Christian’s best collections yet, so it was pretty difficult to only pick one dress that I’d like to see at the show this year…but, in the end, this shocking pink off-the-shoulder cocktail dress with a stunning train won out. Although I love it as is, I also wouldn’t mind seeing a floor-length version….maybe he’ll team up with “Orange is the New Black” star Uzo Aduba, who is nominated for her supporting role on the hit Netflix show.
Ulyana Sergeenko, Fall 2015 Couture
A bit on the flashier side, I love the bold vibe of this black trumpet cocktail dress with a glittering cobalt window pane pattern. I’ll be honest, I kind of slipped in a true personal wish here because I really would love to strictly see Katy Perry wear it. It was just announced that she’s presenting this year and I think this would be a fun one for her.
Monique Lhuillier, Spring 2016 Ready-to-Wear
I didn’t featured too many looks from the spring/summer collections — even though I imagine we’ll see a lot of them on the carpet this year, but this orange and red dress from Monique Lhuillier is a thing of pure beauty; from the unique exaggerated peplum with attached train to the sweet flower appliqués scattering on the skirt.
The first (and, really, the only) person I wanted to see in this was “Chicago, P.D.” actress Sophia Bush, who will be presenting this year. I think it’s a strong contender for her too because she wears a lot of Monique’s creations…and, really, who would say “No” to this dress?
I hope you enjoyed my list, and I’d love your feedback on the new direction this year. Is this something you’d like to see more of?
