It was an evening of rhythm and soul last night at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. VH1 held their annual VH1 Divas concert where the vocal talent — both legendary and new — of different genres came together on one stage for several unforgettable performances. For this years theme, “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul”, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Florence Welch (of Florence + The Machine), Kelly Clarkson and Jessie J headlined the event and took the stage with the likes of Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Boyz II Men, Estelle, Marsha Ambrosius and Travie McCoy.
Jennifer Hudson arrived on the red carpet decked out in a head-to-toe look from Francesco Scognamiglio‘s Fall/Winter 2011 collection. The 30-year-old singer (and Weight Watchers spokeswoman) looked slimmer than ever in this shimmering three-quarter length sleeve dress. Her particular design was not seen on the catwalk; Jenn’s featured a shiny stretchy fabric and thicker lace ruffled embroidery at the neckline.
In addition to the dress, Jenn rocked an insane pair of glittery banded thigh-high boots from the collection! I like the boots more than the dress on her, but I think they were better suited for one of the performances rather than the carpet. I would have loved to have gotten a great view of the heel during the show.
She finished off her look with sparkly hoop earrings, a flower ring and matching bangles from Jacob & Co..
Jennifer dazzled for her show-stopping performance with Mary J. Blige and Kelly Clarkson — they performed a medley including The Supreme’s classic “You Keep Me Hanging On” along with their individual hits “Spotlight”, “Real Love,” and “Since U Been Gone”.
For the medley, Jennifer wore a multicolored jeweled embellished sleeveless v-neck gown from the Playboy-inspired Spring/Summer 2012 collection by The Blonds
. Early on I decided this was my favorite look of hers. The cut was so flattering for her slim, yet curvy figure and her cascading curls looked gorgeous falling to just one side. To further enhance the look, Jennifer’s rocked metallic eyes and a bright magenta lippe. She finished this off with another pair of shoes from Francesco Scognamiglio
‘s collection — sparkling t-strap sandals.
When Jennifer returned to the stage for a high-energy solo number of “Night Of Your Life”, she selected a much more revealing design from the same collection by The Blonds
. Seen on the runway as a very Jessica Rabbit-esque look, Jennifer attempted to amp up the sex-appeal in this red leather embellished bustier mini dress. Between the split neckline showing off a wonky bust and an asymmetrically gathered skirt coming up just too high — I just wasn’t into it.
I understand it was just for a performance, but I don’t think it showed off her figure in a flattering way at all. She finished off the look with flowing curly tresses, fishnet tights, and glittered point-toe pumps.
For her duet with Jessie J of Eddie Floyd’s “Knock On Wood”, Jennifer slipped into look much more suitable style for her. I definitely preferred this pink Spring/Summer 2012 embellished mini dress with fringed detail from Dolce&Gabbana
over the red leather. It hugged her frame well and hit her leg at a nice length. While fierce, I’m not too sure her Christian Louboutin
platform Mary-Jane pumps were the best footwear choice. The scale gold heel mixed with the postcard print at the toe just doesn’t look right with the theme of the dress.
To see all of Jennifer’s looks while you watch all the great performances, don’t miss the “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul” special TONIGHT December 19th at 9 PM/8c only on VH1!
